E’wao Kagoshima received his MFA from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts in 1969, and has lived and worked in New York City since the mid 1970s. Kagoshima has always worked thoroughly in the realm of the avant garde, creating hyper-imaginative and erotic paintings inspired by Pop-Art and surrealism as well as caricature and kitsch. Notoriously reclusive, Kagoshima withdrew from the New York City art scene in the late 1980s. Despite a lifelong career as a working artist, Kagoshima struggled for consistent gallery representation until he was included in the 2010 edition of MoMA PS1’s “Greater New York” survey.
